Are You Lazy With Your Data Security? You're Not Alone
A big portion of the American public is non convinced the federal government and social media sites will safeguard their personal information from hackers, co-ordinate to a new survey from the Pew Inquiry Middle.

Despite these low levels of conviction in the government and social media services, Pew found that most Americans forego basic security measures, like using a password manager. 65% of the surveyed Internet users said they keep track of their passwords in their head and another xviii% write them down on a piece of newspaper.
Moreover, 41% of online adults have shared a password with a friend or family unit member, 39% said they re-utilise passwords for many of their accounts, and 25% know their passwords aren't as secure as they could be ('123456' anyone?).
A good portion of those surveyed aren't bothered with mobile security either: 28% don't apply a screen lock, 10% never install updates, and 54% use insecure public Wi-Fi networks, Pew establish. Worse yet: one in v who use public Wi-Fi networks perform sensitive activities like eCommerce or online banking while being connected to these unsecured networks.
On a more positive note, Pew establish that more than half of online adults (52%) now use 2-step authentication on at least i account. When it comes to encryption, people are divided: 46% believe the regime should be able to access encrypted communications while 44% felt tech companies should be able to utilise tools that are uncrackable fifty-fifty past law enforcement.
The survey also revealed that "cybersecurity is non a meridian-of-heed worry for near Americans". 70% wait a major cyber-set on affecting our nation'south public infrastructure, banking, or financial systems in the adjacent five years, only the bulk believe the government and Us businesses are "at least somewhat" prepared to deal with these attacks.
